The Paradox of Peace
Peace is full of paradox--tensions between conflict and reconciliation, between justice and forgiveness, between hope and fear. Join us in honoring Nobel Peace Prize laureates who have navigated these paradoxes:
- President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia
- the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)
Friday, September 14
On Friday programming will focus on the peace process in Colombia with representatives from the peace process, Leonel Narvaez of Forgiveness International, Nancy Lindborg of the U.S. Institute of Peace, and Priscilla Hayner, author of The Peacemaker’s Paradox. Additional programming will take place with Maya Soetoro-Ng, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, Peter Gleick, and panels of the “paradox of water.”
Saturday, September 15
Saturday’s programming will engage with the “wicked problem” of ridding the world of the nuclear weapons that threaten the very existence of life on earth. ICAN’s Executive Director Beatrice Fihn and panelists such as Ambassador Laura Holgate will discuss ongoing efforts to avoid nuclear war. Additional programming will take place on the paradox of water, water diplomacy in the Middle East, and the new Green Revolution in agriculture.
